If you’re starting a blog for the new year let me be the first to say congratulations! I’m sure you have all kinds of questions running through your mind. No worries, that’s totally normal. And there’s no reason to panic because there is all kinds of resources to get answers to those questions.
Let me also say there is no need to stress over it because as a blogger, we’ll always have questions – it’s a part of our growth. Shewt, I’m going on six years and I still have a couple questions myself.
When you become a blogger, you are joining a club that’s has millions of members. According to Wikipedia, there were around 172 million Tumblr blogs and 75.8 million WordPress blogs that existed as of February 20, 2014 worldwide and you can bet that number is steady growing three years later.
So what do you do to stand out from the millions of blogs out there? Well, there are four all-important tips that you should make sure to follow in order for your blog to be noticed in this big ole blogosphere and here they are.
4 Important Tips For A Kick A** Blog
Set up a user friendly and mobile-responsive theme. Nowadays, most folks are glued to their cell phones and don’t leave home without it so make sure your theme will look awesome when accessed from any mobile device.
If you decide to go with a WordPress blog, which I highly recommend but the theme you choose isn’t mobile ready, there’s a plugin called WPTouch that allows you to customize your site’s appearance and deliver user-friendly and stylish version of your site to your mobile visitors.
Once you have the theme down and you start to build you want to make sure your blog is attractive and not hard on the eyes. Read my post Five Ways To Freshen Up Your Blog for suggestions for a crisp, clean blog.
You’ve got to have great content. Keep your readers wanting to go back to your blog. Create original content that will help them in some way and share your story or journey so your readers can relate to you.
Remember, when writing, write in your own voice and don’t try to be like someone else. It’s okay to want to be like your favorite blogger and by that I mean being able to reach a reader through a blog post but you don’t want to use their tone. Trust me, your readers will see right through it.
You want to build an engaging community. If someone leaves a comment on your blog post or on a social media post leave a reply then show the love by making sure to visit their blog in return, leaving a thoughtful comment and not one liners like “great post”and share their work on your social media pages. So build those relationships with other bloggers and loyal readers!
Last but not least, you have to keep learning. There is always something new to learn in the blogging world. Keep your eyes open for the latest tips and tricks such as how to optimize your blog to play by Googles rules yet sound human to your reader or learning what the latest trend is to attract readers and drive more traffic to your blog. Is it text, images, video? I can go on about this but I think you get my drift.
