Many people start the new year with resolutions to get healthy or lose weight. For that reason, if you belong to a gym, you may notice it got a lot more crowded the first few weeks of January.
Now that it’s the middle of February, I’ve already noticed that my gym has gotten back to its normal crowd. People that join just because it’s the new year don’t tend to stick around.
I, however, love my gym. We got a family membership in September, and have quickly become regulars there. And by “We” I mean my entire family.
Today, I’m going to share the reasons that I love my gym, and these reasons are things you should consider before you join one too.
One of the great things about the gym that we joined is that there is no long-term commitment. We didn’t have to sign a contract or pay a joining fee. If we want to cancel our membership, all that is required is that you give a month’s notice. I think that’s pretty fair.
If you are considering joining a gym for the first time, you want to be clear what their terms and conditions of membership are.
My favorite thing about our gym is the variety. Not only are there a ton of different classes to choose from, but there are different locations you can go to. We live right in between 2 branches, so I check each of their group exercise schedules before deciding where I want to go.
With 2 different locations, I get different teachers, different scenery, and get to meet different people. I don’t want to get bored when I’m exercising, so this is a big plus for me.
In addition to classes, my husband likes to make use of the weight lifting equipment and indoor track. They also have a swimming pool, which will be great for the kids to take lessons this summer.
Make sure you check out what things are available at your gym before signing up.
This is also a pretty huge thing for my family.
For an extra monthly fee (which is totally worth it!) my kids can go to their childcare while I work out. In fact, they can stay up to 3 hours a day. I don’t think I could possibly work out that long, but it’s nice to know I could.
The childcare facility was the first thing I looked at when I was touring our gym. I wanted to make sure it was secure, it was clean, and that I felt comfortable with who would be watching my children.
I was immediately put at ease when I got there. There were security measures in place, the workers are certified in First Aid and CPR, and it’s very well maintained.
Now, my kids run into the childcare area, they are greeted by name, and have a blast. I sometimes get a wave as they are running off to play.
They have fun, I get alone time, and a workout?! Definitely love.

Some people can work out on their own at home or go for a run every day. I’m not one of those people.
I need to have a place to go to motivate me. I write out my schedule of classes for the week, pack my gym bag, and get my work outs in each week. It really helps me commit to staying healthy and getting fit.
My gym, and many others, also have personal trainers available. They can help you come up with fitness goals, show you how to properly use equipment, and keep you on track.
There are also quarterly incentive programs at my gym. For example, if you maintained or lost weight during the holiday, you got a t-shirt.
I live wear it is freezing cold about 9 out of 12 months. This could easily be my excuse for not exercising. Who wants to go out and run outside in the snow? Not me.
With an indoor track, indoor pool, classes, cardio equipment, and weights, there are really no excuses not to go.
With the exception of major holidays, my gym is always open. They also open super early and stay open late into the evening, so you can go almost at any time.
If you’re serious about getting fit and healthy this year, I highly recommend checking out some gyms in your area. They are definitely not all created equal, but I’m confident that you can find one you love as much as I love mine.
