There are all kinds of opinions when it comes to working from home. Even though there are legitimate work-from-home jobs, the term “work-from-home” still has a bit of a bad reputation. That they’re fluff jobs and not careers. That people who telecommute can’t focus because of home life, yada, yada.
But the main misconception about working from home is that it must be a piece of cake. And I can’t blame anyone for thinking that. After all, we get to work from the comfort of our own home, make our own schedules, and spend time with our family whenever we want versus working around a 9-5 job.
And when there are pics of people sitting on their couch in their pajamas with their laptop and a big smile on their faces as if things are just peachy king, it only fans the flame. I have to admit, I thought the same thing too when I first learned about working from home.
But to be quite honest – okay, very honest with you, it’s not as easy as it looks. There are daily interruptions from family and friends, you have to manage your money in order to avoid feeling the pinch of a loss in income and if you’re running an online or home-based business, you’re probably working more than you did in a “regular” job.
It takes a lot of effort to balance family and work so before jump into this lifestyle, take a moment to weigh out the pros and cons. Some folks who have done this little exercise have ended up back in an office because it doesn’t work out for one reason or another.
