As a mom of 2, I am always trying to get my kids to eat different things. Luckily, Cam (10 months) is just loving all kinds of food now and is willing to try anything I put on his high chair tray. But Capri (3) is timid to try new things. As adults, we often steer clear of foods that we don’t ‘think’ we like.
But have you ever actually tried these foods that you don’t think you like? I’d like to share some fruits and vegetables with you that I think you should give a chance if you haven’t already, and please tell me some that you think I would like too!
I didn’t try asparagus until I was in my mid-20s. No one serves asparagus at school. And my mom surely didn’t make it at home. But it was available at a party I was at so I gave it a try and to my surprise it was delicious! And it is so good for you, especially women.
Eating asparagus can help to prevent mouth ulcers, which are really annoying! And they are rich in folic acid which women should be getting plenty of. And, get ready for this one, asparagus can relieve some of the effects alcohol has on your body so it can help alleviate your hangover! Wine and asparagus! Hooray!
I never had lima beans growing up and I didn’t really know about them until my now husband’s mom made them for dinner one time. I loved them! I asked my mom why she never made lima beans for me because I compared their taste to a pea and I love peas. Turns out that my great grandfather was a lima bean farmer. She told me that my grandfather ate so many lima beans when he was growing up that he told my grandmother to never make them. So my mom never ate them. So she never made them for us growing up! Isn’t it funny how just one person can change the eating habits of a whole generation!?
The easiest way to try lima beans is to get the frozen kind in the freezer section of your grocery store. Heat them up with a little butter and serve hot! I personally love them as a side with mashed potatoes and a roast.
I honestly never tried this fruit before because it was always really expensive. But then I started to notice pomegranate juices and read that according to a 2008 study, which compared the potency of 10 different polyphenol-rich beverages, pomegranate juice scored top billing as the most healthful of them all! Pomegranates are also an excellent source of Vitamin C which everyone could use more of in their life!
If you have never eaten a pomegranate before (like me until recently) you were probably wondering which part of the fruit is actually edible. You’ll be surprised to know that it is the seeds, or the arils, that are the edible part. This is also why this fruit is so expensive! You can eat the whole seed alone, or you can sprinkle them on salads.
Now this one might be a stretch but I think the kiwi is a fruit that many people just don’t give enough credit! The kiwi is a tiny fruit with many surprises inside. The brown fuzzy skin may not be appealing to some, but it is what is inside that counts. Inside you’ll find a green fruit speckled with small black seeds that tastes almost creamy, but reminds me of a mix of strawberries and bananas. In fact, I discovered kiwis in a fruit salad that a friend made and now they are one of my favorite summer fruits to eat!
What different fruits and vegetables do you like? Do you eat anything I mentioned?
