When my kids were little I didn’t have the option to stay at home with them. I had to work to help pay the bills. Which sucked because I missed out on school plays, I couldn’t attend events like parent-teacher meets and worst of all, my kids couldn’t participate in after school activities because I or the hubs couldn’t pick them up.
After my oldest daughter started to rebel when she was in the elventh grade, I had no choice but to quit my job before her rebellion landed her in trouble – or she’d do something worse than skip school. I was ready to quit because of the long hours, let’s just say that’s the straw that finally broke the camel’s back.
But that’s when the financial problems began to hit us.
No matter what decision a mom makes…whether to stay home to raise a family or have a career, it’s a good one. But why should there be a choice between family and being an entrepreneur or mompreneur as it’s more commonly referred to now? Okay, is it just me or do you feel like burning your bra like women did in the 70s for women’s rights or feel like Sally Field in Norma Rae, hehe.
If I could do it all over again, I would have looked in to starting my own home-based direct sales business but I guess that wasn’t in the plans for me. What was in my plan was being able to share what I wish I knew back then with you, dear reader, so that if you’re in the position I was in years ago, you now know you don’t have to choose between having a family and a career. You can have both!

Let’s start with the obvious. You get to work from home. There is no more commute to an office and deal with traffic to and from work. You don’t have to spend money on a wardrobe or spend money on meals. And best of all, you’re around when your family needs you.

Running a direct sales homebased business allows you to set your own yours. You decide when to get your work day started which is a major plus when you have kids to get ready for school. It’s been a long time for me but the memories of rushing kids to eat their breakfast and get dressed are still fresh in my mind! Now I’m helping my daughter get her kids ready for school and the routine hasn’t changed much, hehe.

Another good think about a direct sales business? It doesn’t take a lot of money to start. For moms who are on a budget the low start-up cost is another advantage.
Also, most, if not all direct sales companies offer their independent distributors a starter’s kit from rates like $50 to $100.
Education and Professional Experience Is Not Required
Another great thing about starting a home-based direct sales business is education and professional experience is not required. This is a great industry for stay-at-home moms who have no work history and only a high school diploma/GED.
As long as you have the passion and drive for your business, that is all the requirements you need to be a successful direct sales business owner.
There Is Money to Be Made
Last but not least, it’s the money. There is money to be made in the direct sales industry but it all depends on you and the work you put toward your business. Like my mom says, you get back what you put into something and I believe that.

Skills and Characteristics
Even though you don’t need a college degree or professional experience, you do need certain skills and characteristics to run a success home-based direct sales business.
For starters you have to be outgoing to be able to speak in front of crowds and network with others in your industry. And you’ll have to be able to motivate yourself to get up every day to grow your business and increase sales.
Whatever product you decide to sell there are two important things: that you buy into the product and stand behind them and that you know the product you’re selling. If you’re selling a product you wouldn’t use yourself, a customer can easily tell.
