Every now and then I get an email or a message on social media from someone asking about running a virtual assistant biz.
I thought I’d put the five common questions together in a blog post to share with you and anyone else who might be asking themselves these same preguntas.
#1 What are the chances of my virtual assistant business doing well?
The virtual assistant industry has grown by leaps and bounds. It wasn’t too long ago when there were only few (hundred) virtual assistants. But, now there are thousands if not millions of VAs situated around the globe. And it’s steady growing because the demand is there.
Let me put it like this – not only can you find clients locally, but you can also have clients who live on the other side of the world.
We’re talkin’ about online business owners, mompreneurs, solopreneurs even brick and mortar business owners can use a VA’s help.
#2 What are the benefits of being a Virtual Assistant?
Everyone has their own reasons for staring a VA biz.
For one, it’s the low start-up costs. Since this business can be managed from your home, there is no need to rent office space.
You don’t need special equipment either. Just basic and equipment like a computer, printer, fax and software like quickbooks and management tools is all you need to get started.
Another reason people give is to have control over their destiny. Folks are tired of working for ‘the man’. It could be that their current job doesn’t offer any growth so they take their skills and experience and build something of their own. They figure if they’re going to bust their butts off, it might as well be for their own business.
And then you have others who start a VA business because they’re unable to work due to an illness or health problem.
But the most common reason people give is to spend more time at home with their family.
#3 Do I need a business license to start a virtual assistant business?
It depends on where you live. States like Georgia requires independent contractors like VAs to get a business license while other States do not.
But it’s better to check with your county and state to be sure. And you want to find out if your area allows home-based businesses. The last thing you want is to pay a fine or possibly lose your business if you’re running it without the proper licensing.
Ay, what a nightmare that would be, right?
#4 Do I need training to become a Virtual assistant?
It all depends on how much experience you have. Some VAs got their experience from previous jobs. On the other hand, some trained to gain the skills and knowledge to handle the various tasks that a virtual assistant does.
But, if you want your business to grow, you should make a point to build on your skills and stay up to date with the industry so you can expand the type of services to offer clients.

#5 What is the best – and affordable way to market a virtual assistant business?
You can market your business online and offline.
For example, to promote your business online – and if you have the budget, you can place an ad on Google through AdWords.
But if you’re on a tight budget or no budget at all, for starters, you can:
- Create a website for your business
- Start a blog to share your tips and expertise
- Share your content and other VAs content on social media
- Start an email list
- Contribute to online communities like Facebook groups
- Post ads to promote your business on social media
- Create a YouTube channel
To promote your business offline, you can list your business on sites like Yahoo! Local Listing and register with your local Chamber of Commerce.
You can also pass out flyers, mail out brochures and pitch letters to other businesses, and network in community organizations.
